Regulatory approval of a new water treatment chemical.

The MIEX® DOC Resin is a new patented high capacity ion exchange resin which includes a magnetised component provided to the market by Orica Watercare. Both Dr Drew and Mr Frangos have played a critical role in the regulatory approvals for the resin. Notification under the National Industrial Chemical Notification and Assessment Scheme was coordinated successfully. The notification was the first of its kind in Australia and involved product safety testing and preparation of a unique style of submission to address public health impacts and support notification. Mr Frangos has assisted Orica Watercare in the NSF Certification process, and further assessments by TERA (Toxicology Excellence in Risk Assessment).

New Ambient Air Quality Guidelines for New Zealand

A commentary on the Ministry for Environment's proposed processes for air quality guidelines was prepared by Dr Roger Drew in February 2001 on behalf of the New Zealand Wood Panels Manufactures' Association. The report critiqued the proposals and, for some compounds provided viable, defensible alternative values that were derived from current toxicological knowledge and application of WHO risk assessment procedures.

Technical Analysis of the Differences in Australian and New Zealand Chemical Legislation

Mr Frangos acted as a project leader in a pivotal technical analysis of chemical legislation in Australia and New Zealand. The report was used to identify legislation that is suitable for mutual recognition or harmonisation across the Tasman. The report will be presented to Australian and New Zealand governments as an appendix to the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement Annual Report.

Industrial Emissions of Volatile Organics

A review of international air quality guidelines for volatile organic compounds and dioxins was undertaken for a corporate client. The review entailed documentation and understanding of processes used by different overseas jurisdictions for evaluating risk associated with air emissions and making recommendations for a process that could be used, and would acceptable to regional authorities in Australia, in the sensitive circumstances prevailing at the time. On behalf of the regional authorities, the process and its output was reviewed by an independent expert in toxicology in early 2001.
